A fair sharing of revenues between publishers and big tech companies like Google, Facebook is stated as one of the goals in Canadian government’s proposed Online News Act. If big tech companies and publishers cannot agree, the proposed law includes a mandatory arbitration similar to the one recently introduced in Australia despite loud protests from Google and Facebook.
Elon Musk has taken a 9.2% stake in Twitter, becoming the biggest shareholder and, despite lack of statements from Musk, the markets reacted dramatically positively and share were up more than 25% when the news broke. Twitter CEO, Parag Agrawal, in a tweet said the company will appoint Musk to be a member of Twitter´s board of directors. Shortly afterwards, Musk got an ‘Edit’ button for his money.
At least seven journalists have been killed during the war in Ukraine, most recently Lithuanian documentary filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravicius who died trying to leave Mariupol on April 2, the Committee to Protect Journalists report. Several journalists have been injured or detained, says CPJ’s Gulnoza Said. At the same time, Dmitry Muratov, a voice fighting for freedom of expression, editor of newspaper Novaya Gazeta and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been attacked by a person pouring acid red paint over him on a train.
Google’s Threat Analysis Group reports a continuously growing number of threat actors using the war in Ukraine as a lure in phishing and malware campaigns. During the last couple of weeks government-backed actors from China, Iran, North Korea and Russia, as well as various unattributed groups, have used various Ukraine war-related themes in an effort to get targets to open malicious emails or click malicious links.
