The EU Commission published a consultation on the planned European Media Freedom Act. After the consultation, the Commission will in the third quarter publish a proposal. The idea is to ensure pluralism and independence of the EU media market.
YouTube is one of the major conduits of online disinformation and misinformation worldwide, the global International Factchecking Network said in a letter to Alphabet-owned YouTube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki. “YouTube is allowing its platform to be weaponized by unscrupulous actors to manipulate and exploit others, and to organize and fundraise themselves.”
Meta/Facebook is facing a multibillion-dollar UK class action for breach of competition law on the basis that it abused its dominance of social networking for several years. The class action against Meta, Facebook´s parent company, has been made by international competition law expert Liza Lovdahl Gormsen.
New actions to protect children online were announced by the EU Commission and UK’s Information Commissioner’s office (ICO). The EU Commission wants tougher rules against child sexual abuse online and ICO wants to secure that Meta operates in accordance with a new children’s code that priorities the “best interests” of young users.
Google made a proposal to close German competition authority’s investigation on how the company is using its service Google News Showcase. The proposal means that also if publishers have agreed to get paid for contributing content to the News Showcase service, they can negotiate to get paid for Google using the publisher’s content in search results.
