The Week That Was: the 6 things you need to know

Swedish price comparison company PriceRunner sued Google for a preliminary amount of EUR 2.1 billion. The company says Google has manipulated search results by prioritizing its own shopping recommendations.

Details for its earlier announced European Chips Act were presented by the European Commission saying that the Act will “make Europe a leader” in the market for semiconductors. The goal is to by 2030 have 20% of the global market share of chips production. Right now, it is 9%.

Meta’s Oversight Board recommended the company to improve privacy by removing an exception to the Privacy Violations Community Standard to protect people’s addresses from being shared online; at the same time, Meta’s complaints about E.U. privacy rules in its annual report were interpreted by some media as a threat to leave Europe, something that the company officially denied. 

European Publishers Council filed an antitrust complaint against Google with the European Commission saying the aim is “to break the ad tech stranglehold Google currently has over press publishers, and all other businesses in the ad tech ecosystem.”

Teen girls and women say they were more exposed to online risks in 2021 compared to the previous year while teen boys and men say the situation online has improved. Females experienced almost 60% of all risks reported in 2021, an all-time high, according to Microsoft´s annual study of online safety.

Apple announced changes for its AirTags after critics pointed out that the device can be misused by stalkers. The AirTag was introduced less than a year ago and meant to be used together with Apple’s Find My network to track the owner’s bags and other belongings.
