The Week That Was: the 7 things you need to know

Social media companies rushed to make statements making it more clear how they handle information about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Hacking group Anonymous announced a cyber war against Russia and claimed an attack on the state-controlled TV network Russia Today, where they projected Ukrainian President’s appeal towards the Russian people instead.

Big tech companies and other providers of cloud and data processing services will have to follow new rules on who can use and access data generated in the EU across all economic sectors, according to the European Data Act proposed by the EU Commission. American big tech companies have audibly protested against strict European rules for transfer of data from the EU to the US.

Facebook launched its TikTok-competitor Reels for iOS and Android in more than 150 countries. The launch came around a year after it was introduced in the US. The company said it is expanding tests of overlay ads, starting with banner and sticker ads, arguing that this will help creators to earn money on Reels.

Three organizations that represent the French cinema announced a historic financing agreement with Netflix, the first between a cinema association and a video streaming platform. The agreement fuels the French film production with a percentage of Netflix’s net profits in France and in exchange gives the platform exclusivity rights and a shorter waiting time for streaming the movies.

Two out of three leadership roles in the U.K. FTSE 350 companies go to men, but significant progress is noticed in FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 companies, according to a new study published by FTSE Women Leaders. The U.K. is ranked third among European countries in corporate diversity,

Jamal Edwards, founder of media platform SBTV that started as a YouTube channel where a number of new artists first performed, died at the age of 31. Among artists who started on on his SBTV are Ed Sheeran, Dave, Jessie J, Stormzy, Rita Ora, Krept & Konan, Bugzy Malone.

Ex-president Donald Trump’s social media Truth Social launched with the app available on Apples App Store. Trump had his accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc blocked after the Capitol Hill riots on January 6 last year as the media companies considered him guilty of inciting violence. Trump has said Truth Social will “stand up to the tyranny of big tech”.
