With a growing focus on the metaverse, media and entertainment companies may need to collaborate more to create a future where they remain at the centre, says consultancy Deloitte in its 2022 report on digital media trends with data collected from the US, UK, Germany, Brazil, and Japan. The report stresses that the metaverse is not really only a futuristic dream. To some extent, it is already here.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the economic and geopolitical uncertainty will reduce US advertising spending in 2022, advertising company Magna says in an updated forecast. However, media revenue should still grow 11% this year to pass USD 300 billion. The revised outlook is down by 1%.

Artificial Intelligence could help local news outlets improve social media monitoring and stay on top of content discovery. AI could also generate, optimize and schedule social media posts and be big time savers, especially for small newsrooms where staff add social to their other duties. These are among key findings in a study by the Associated Press.

Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta announced that it stops publishing until the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine as it has received a new warnings issued by Russian authorities. The newspaper´s publisher is Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa, publisher of Philippine website Rappler, were awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for their fight for press freedom.

The focus on streaming television trend is once again stressed with CNN’s earlier announced streaming service CNN+ now launched. This change has over the last years has been clear in the US where cable TV earlier was the dominating platform but it has there gone from 9 in 10 households having it to just around half of them.
