The Week That Was: IT and Media news week 6

Meta needs to reconsider its policy for manipulated media, the company’s Oversight Board says. Easily accessible tools mean manipulated media can be a threat in 2024, which is a big election year with four billion citizens in 76 countries voting.

Tougher rules on cyber violence are included in a provisional deal to combat gender-based violence that has been reached between the EU Parliament and the European Council.  The deal is described by the Parliament as the “first ever EU rules on combating violence against women”. The agreement includes measures to prevent rape and better support for victims.

News avoidance and misinformation are growing problems especially in a big election year like 2024 with citizens in 76 countries, including the US, going to the polls. But a growing number says inaccurate news reports are a problem.

Facebook is celebrating its 20th birthday. Women are the by far biggest user group. Over the last two decades, the site has contributed to the way people connect online. Its reach has grown to 3 billion monthly users worldwide.  76% of women in the US use the platform, compared with 59% of men.
